Republican businessman Rob Cornilles of Tualatin and Democratic state Sen. Suzanne Bonamici of Beaverton have jumped into the 1st Congressional District race to replace former Congressman David Wu, who resigned Wednesday night.
Cornilles, who announced his candidacy Thursday morning, is the founder of Game Face Inc. in Tualatin. He lost to Wu in the 2010 election by about 38,000 votes.
Cornilles said he was “frustrated that such a vibrant and diverse area as the 1st Congressional District has been largely forgotten and poorly represented in Congress for far too long.”
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Republican sports-business consultant says he will run in a special election for the congressional seat held by Rep. David Wu, who has said he will resign.
Rob Cornilles says he will hold a news conference Thursday to announce his candidacy. He ran against Wu last year and lost 55-42.
Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian and state Rep. Brad Witt are running for the Democratic nomination. Other potential candidates from both parties also are considering the race.
Republican businessman Rob Cornilles says he will announce his candidacy Thursday for Oregon’s 1st Congressional District, which is expected to be vacant in the wake of incumbent Democrat U.S. Rep. David’s announced resignation.
Cornilles, who ran unsuccessfully against Wu last year, issued a news release saying he will hold a press conference at Bioject Medical Technologies in Washington County.
“Bioject is exactly the type of innovative, high-tech small business that Oregon’s First District needs more of in order to bring good jobs back to the area,” Cornilles’ news release said.
